Resolution of Support for Save the Peaks coalition (ratified January 10th, 2009)

The Arizona Green Party (AZGP) hereby supports the Tribes and environmental groups in their unified petition of appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court to protect religious freedom and the ecological integrity of the San Francisco Peaks. This action is being taken by the Green Party at the state level because of the broad regional representation of the plaintiffs (the Navajo Nation, Havasupai Tribe, White Mountain Apache Nation, Yavapai-Apache Nation, Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity, and the Flagstaff Activist Network in the current appeal; and also the Hopi and Hualapai tribes and others in earlier lawsuits) and because of the national issues concerning equal protection of sites which Native Americans hold holy or sacred according to their religious beliefs; and of the environmental and health risks from the increasingly widespread proposed usage of treated sewage effluent, as though it is safe in sensitive wildlands and aquifers used for human consumption. The AZGP does not at this time join coalitions such as SAVE THE PEAKS for ongoing collaboration, but supports the goals of that group in pursuit of the current Supreme Court appeal and other litigation and legal maneuvers to stop the use of treated sewage effluent on the Sacred San Francisco Peaks (as they are widely known to the Tribes and others) in pursuit of the above protections.
